See what past interns say:

“I worked at H+O for 6 months under their co-op program and can say that I left much better equipped in my young engineering career. My mentors taught me what I needed to know and more to meaningfully contribute to projects. I felt empowered to ask questions and to learn as much as I could. Being a part of team meetings helped me quickly integrate into the cooperative company culture. The weekly GGOB updates expanded my perspective regarding business financials that go beyond just engineering.

My experience at H+O not only equipped me with valuable knowledge and experience but also inspired me to further explore all the possibilities of what I can contribute to the field.”

“My time at H+O started the summer after my sophomore year, where I eagerly joined as a Design Engineering Co-op. As of August 2024, I returned to H+O for my second co-op because I had such an incredible experience. From the variety of assigned tasks that I was able to contribute to such as Revit modeling, sheet set-up, shop drawing reviews, and design work, I felt confident in my problem solving abilities. H+O provided me with a wealth of resources and training modules, and I have come to realize during my co-op that it was never a question of how can I solve this problem, rather how can I use the available resources to independently solve any problem. Once I had exhausted my resources, I was so grateful to have co-workers who were willing to sit down with me for hours to teach me. In this way, I was never hesitant to ask questions and believe this to be a testament to H+O commitment to mentorship and the growth of young engineers like myself. During my time here at H+O, I was able to work on the design and detailing of wood, steel, and concrete structures. And as a return co-op, I am able to jump immediately into work that contributes to projects in real time. I have been able to take on more design work and whenever I want to take on a new challenge, my PM would try to get me work that aligns with my interests and goals as a return co-op. From the diverse set of experiences and exposure to different types of construction, I am able to apply what I have learned from my co-op to the classes I takes the following semester and vice-versa. On top of this, I am excited to come to work every day to work alongside coworkers who are kind, funny, and just overall amazing people who motivate me to do better every day. I believe in the mission of company and am excited to have listened into and been part of conversations regarding the development of the company as a whole. H+O’s transparency has allow me to understand how company values influences company decisions. I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of a team that values collaboration, mentorship, and innovation.”

“I had an amazing eight months at H+O. It was my first structural co-op and I was nervous about not having taken enough classes to succeed, but from day one, it was clear that wasn’t going to be the case. H+O has a plethora of training videos that are actually applicable to the tasks I was doing throughout my co-op. Everyone was also extremely willing to sit with me and go over different tasks even if we weren’t on the same team. They made sure I grasped the concepts and theories behind each task to ensure I was truly learning, not just completing the work with no understanding. The work itself varied in project scale, markets served and building material which helped me gain a wide variety of experience that I will reference for the rest of my career. With the open-book financial approach, I also learned about the business side of the company, helping me grow as a person and not just an engineer. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I can’t wait to return.”

“I am truly grateful for the opportunity to intern at H+O Structural Engineering during the summer of 2024. The H+O team is extraordinarily talented, excelling not only as engineers but also as managers and mentors. After interning at four different firms, I can confidently say that the work experience and environment at H+O stand out as the best I have encountered, fostering both professional and personal growth.

During the first week of my internship, I participated in a comprehensive training module that introduced me to essential engineering software, including Revit, Enercalc, RAM Elements and RAM Structural Systems. The training also provided valuable insights into the company’s financial operations, vision, and future plans.

By the end of my internship, I had acquired practical skills in designing wood studs, steel columns, wood and steel beams, composite steel beams, and spread footings. I also gained expertise in performing structural analysis using RAM Elements, Enercalc, and Forte. Additionally, I developed BIM models using Revit, focusing on 3D modeling, work planning, sheet setup, and detailed drafting for projects such as single and multi-family residential housing, podiums, and steel framed buildings.

H+O not only elevated my engineering and modeling skills but also familiarized me with the financial aspects of the industry through their financial transparency strategy and weekly performance meetings. Despite being a relatively young company, having started only six years ago, H+O has successfully designed impressive and unique projects not only in Boston but also across many various states. Their diversified portfolio allowed me to gain exposure to different types of buildings, both in the construction administration process and the modeling and design process.

Overall, my experience at H+O Structural Engineering was invaluable, and I feel fortunate to have been part of such an innovative and supportive team.”
