Structure costs are not something structural engineers measure, making it impossible for them to understand the cost implications of the design decisions they make day in and day out. The reality is small, seemingly insignificant design decisions greatly impact the bottom line. With the H+O Cost Index, you no longer need to accept this blind risk. We leverage technology and cost data to inform structural design so you don’t overspend.

This $29MM affordable housing development was 83,800 GSF and far from simple due to site conditions—sloped site, existing deficient site retaining wall, soil conditions, and more. These conditions make it hard for you, as a client or the structural engineer, to know whether a design is cost-effective. Hundreds of moving variables make it easy to unknowingly miss cost-saving opportunities.

Fortunately, this confidential client recognized the project challenges and knew there was an opportunity to reduce costs. They asked H+O to review the current design and identify cost saving opportunities. Here are the results:

Savings Identified

  • $306k in unnecessary piles
  • $150k limit area of soil removal and replacement to footings only
  • $360k omit soil nailing and shotcrete with creative SOE sequencing
  • $20k omit more than (100) W8 infill beams.
  • $40k additional uncaptured optimization in steel framing

In total, H+O identified more than $800k in cost saving opportunities that would reduce total hard cost by 2.8%.

If you’ve worked in commercial real estate development, you know how fast paced and ever-changing the process can be. Sometimes dozens of consultants responsible for different aspects and coordination – incentives are almost never aligned across parties.

Here is the reality.
The structural engineer DID their job. They designed a safe building meeting building code requirements and the Standard of Care for the industry.

The problem is a structural engineer also influences about 20% of hard costs with no training or processes to manage the costs of the structures they design.

That’s why we created the H+O Cost Index, combining technology and cost data to inform structural engineering design so you don’t overpay.

We’re proud to support nationally recognized developers and architects.

“I have been fortunate to work with H+O on several wood-framed projects. I have found them to have a good understanding of how to effectively utilize offsite components in a way that brings great value to their clients. They do a great job designing cost-effective projects that are easily constructed. I would give them a high recommendation.”

Tom Dixon

“I can say with confidence H+O executes at a high level, regardless of the project type or location, and consistently does so in a timely manner.”

Ryan Noone
EMBARC

“I believe that most, if not all, of their structural engineers are trained to deliver a similar result that looks and feels the same. They have their systems down.”

Parker Snyder
ARCO National Construction

“They work with us, not against us. They don’t complain, bring a negative attitude, or “this is how I do it” ego. They are fresh thinking, can-do collaborators, in which we enjoy their presence as ‘designers’ on the team.”
